And so the dream ends...

Well, massive congratualtions go to the boys in green and gold this week!

Enough petty arguments over the differences between the three/four football codes, their names and how great they are as games. How about we just look at this for what it is: an Australian team doing the rest of us proud.

Some people argue  that the Socceroos have only gained the support they have because of bandwagon jumpers. I beg to differ. The team already had a wide supporter base in this country BEFORE the World Cup. There was just one problem: they didn't play enough meaningful games to gain crowds at their matches. I mean, which die-hard football (soccer) fan is going to fork out big bucks to take leave from their jobs and travel to Western Samoa or some other tiny island nation to watch our second-string side slaughter them ten-nil? Not real exciting is it? On the other hand, watching our first rate side compete with the best in the world is FAR more interesting, and much more likely to awaken the supporter base which has so long been dormant.

To me, jumping on the bandwagon is what the Footy Shows, from both of the other football codes respectively, have done.  Travelling all the way to Germany to do their shows from, for the purpose of this excercise, "SOCCER"s World Cup is shamelessly milking somebody else's glory it for all it's worth...and trying to turn it into their own benefit. The bloody hilarious thing is though, Eddy Macguire got sponsors for that timeslot, promising them an audience of 2 million. He didn't make the cut, and now has to provide them all with free advertising to compensate! HAHA! Serves him bloody well right! That, my friends, is bandwagon jumping.

And even if you still consider the newfound football fans bandwagon jumpers, who cares? At least they're supporting their national side in a fabulous achievement.

Furthermore, who gives a damn whether you think football (soccer) or football (AFL) is better? I myself don't follow the AFL, it doesn't interest me in the slightest. However, it's obvious that while I see AFL as rather blood-thirsty, it draws an enormous supporter base in Australia. But it will never go world-wide. Soccer on the other hand, gains arguably a smaller supporter base downunder but is massive on the global scene. So, they are both great games, in different spheres.
Quit arguing over it.

AFL and the other codes, GET OVER YOUR INFERIORITY COMPLEX!!!!!!!

GO THE SOCCEROOS!!!!!!!!!!!

As for Tuesday morning, like many others at Skycity, in bars and pubs and homes across Adelaide, and throughout the nation, I was bitterly disappointed...and kind of angry about being robbed. But now that I've calmed down, I've come to the realisation that what comes around goes around. Italy, at the last World Cup, were robbed in an even more controversial style than we were. I'm still sad that we couldn't go through, but it's not the end of the world. There will be another FIFA World Cup, and we will be there, fighting it out on the field with the best of them. However, I can do nought but congratulate the Italians, and will jump on their "bandwagon" for the rest of the World Cup.

FORZA AUSTRALIA!!!! FORZA GLI AZZURI!!!!!!!!

Peace out

"I THINK, therefore I AM"

I think:

  • that all people (myself included) are on a need to know basis. Don't give them any more information than is absolutely necessary, else you (and even they) will end up regretting it.
  • that if local and national politicians wasted less money on posting stupid campaign fliers covered with their cheesy grins, and put it towards more worthwhile causes, we could put a large hole in poverty and famine both nationally and globally... I don't know about everybody else, but when Mr Brokenshire sends me a list of "important phone numbers" with a big picture of his family on it, I draw the line. I will vote labor at the next state election...at least they haven't been bugging me incessantly with generic letters
  • that chocolate is good for you...**eyes dart around guiltily**
  • that even one alcoholic drink, even three hours before you're meant to commence a gym session, is a BAD idea
  • that sometimes things truly are better when left unsaid
  • that The Biggest Loser is THE most demeaning show currently on television. I don't understand how those people who are meant to be supporting each other through the greatest challenges oftheir lives can be so conniving towards each other
  • that the general cohort of South Australian drivers are crap...we shouldn't be abusing interstate drivers until we ourselves learn to drive according to our laws

Will add to this later

Greetings and Salutations

Hello, and welcome to my new-look space...I was a bit over the bright pink and the flowers and thought it was time for a nice, refreshing change...plus I figured seeing as this has been a fortnight of new-beginnings that a major change was rather pertinent...so for those of you who are wondering, yes, you probably are in the right place.

For those of you who have no idea who I am, you're not where you thought you should be but you're quite welcome to have a browse in here and leave nice comments if you wish :D

Anyhow, for those of you who are interested, I finally managed to upload some of those photos! Stupid computer wouldn't let me add photos for WEEKS...I'll add more later.

Not sure why my media player isn't working though but I'll fix it another time

But now, my friends (and strangers), study calls **shudder**...and so it begins...

See you all soon

Mel

A Culture of Commercialism

Today I'd like to have a brief spiel on what I consider a failing by both the Adelaide City Council and the South Australian Government. And before anyone jumps down my throat to tell me how fantastic Mike Rann is, I'm not referring to WHO is in government (could be either Liberal or Labour for all I care).

So, yesterday a group of friends from the Italian exchange had organised to go to Carnevale in the city...we all roll up promptly (ahem) within a half hour of the agreed meeting time.... Off we go over to Rymill Park where the event is being run and pay a ridiculous $9 each for a student concession.

Ok, so when you pay that much to get in (if I'd forgotten my student card I would have been paying $12) you kind of expect that there'd be at least some free amusements in there to make the money worthwhile, no? Well, there wasn't. You payed to get in, then you payed through the nose for food and amusements. This is a cultural event, for heaven's sake! We're meant to be seeing the best of the Italian community within South Australia. The Glendi festival (Greek) has the same problem. It's difficult to promote a culture when a traditional festival becomes a money-making machine...

So, at first I was slightly miffed with the organising committee for this incredible commercialisation of their culture. Then I discover that the Government and the Council charge them in the 10 to 20 thousand dollar range, just to hold the event. So organisers have to slug ridiculous sums of money to event-goers, simply to break even.

Even after the Carnevale and the Glendi committees applied for government grants to help support the festivals, the government and council refused. How the hell is this promoting multi-culturalism in South Australia????

Perhaps with a little more supoort from councils, governments and the community in general, the organisers of these events would be able to lower the entrance fees (maybe abolishing them altogether would be too optimistic?) to make the event less commercialised and more enjoyable for all.

Anyhow, moving on. Did anyone watch the opening of the Winter Olympics? Awesome stuff! Loved the fireworks too...lol, such a pyro....And omg! watching the highlights last night, those luge specialists are maniacs!!! going down a 117 metre drop at 120 km per hour, lying back on a platform of wood or whatever it is, steering with the freaking ankles!!!!! Made for some spectacular crashes....fortunately nobody was hurt...amazing to watch tho...seriously, anyone who doesnt think these sports are worthy of being Olympic events, stop being traditionalists and give these athletes credit...they're amazing!

But yes, I should stop procrastinating and get myself organised...got stuff to do before work...bye xoxo

Million Dollar Question

To ask, or not to ask?

...that is the question...

Probably my last blog for this year

So, given that this will probably be my last entry for 2005, I thought I'd write a little reflection dedicated to the past 365 days.

In January, I still had my feet firmly planted on Italian soil, with, quite frankly, no intention of returning home to Australia...unfortunately, I had no choice...if I didnt go willingly, I'm sure their immigrations department would have been a little more forceful...

So, some day late in January (can't remember the exact date) I arrived home in Adelaide laden with pasta and coffee to last me until..well, actually...now.

Hence in February commenced that delightful scholastic year so frighteningly called...wait for it... "Year 12"...turned out to be not so evil..i mean, it had its ups and downs and was definitely the toughest year of my schooling, both physically and emotionally...but it was worth it in the end...

March to October...biggest yawn of my life...skip straight to November to save you  guys (and me) reading throught the boring details of a year filled with study...

Ah...good old November...exam time...English Studies, Physics, Maths and Italian all in the same week, followed by Chemistry the week after...fun fun fun

Then, all of a sudden everything dies...all that's left to do is wait for Grad, results, and Christmas...the lowdown on that? Grad was great, receiving my results was like all my christmases had come at once (or at least most)...and Christmas? well, that was overrated.

Oh yeah, and somewhere in there (bout october) I got a job...YAY MEL!

And, in between certain other things that have happened which haven't rated a mention here cos I just can't be stuffed writing much more I have arrived right here to this very day...

and what exciting things have u done today, I here those of you who have made it this far ask? to be honest, not much...finished a really good book called the Bride Stripped Bare...great book for chicks...disturbing that a guy recommended it to me...

On a more serious note, I should start thinking of some resolutions...let's see...I'll set one to do with finances...another more personal...and one to do with fitness..sounds good

Anyhoo...to those of you who are still here after my blabbering, I wish you all a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!! AUGURISSIMI DI BUON CAPODANNO AI MIEI CONOSCENTI ITALIANI!!!!

Party hard guys!

Literally. Well, sometimes anyway. Particularly when it ends before it's really begun.

This makes me sick

For those rioters who are using the Australian flag in their violent outbursts. Don't bother. It's un-Australian and is sending a terrible message to our overseas counterparts. That flag represents everybody living in this country, no matter what ethnic background they happen to belong to. Yes, that means, yourselves and the Lebanese population are included. Stop drawing the line between "us" and "them". You say that you're fighting for what is "Australian" but the manner in which you are doing so is the exact opposite. What would be "Australian" is if you were to direct your anger to constructively reducing the senseless violence which began these riots in the first place. And no, that doesn't mean targeting violent Lebanese people, that means sending the message to all Australians that violence in no way solves anything.

Max, the other day you commented that you know a lot of Lebanese who are proud of their heritage. I'd like to reaffirm that, and add to it if I may. I not only know people of middle-eastern origin who are proud of their background, but they also take a lot of pride in calling themselves "Australian". hmm...strong message there.

Abraham Lincoln once said " A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free".

Well, Mr Lincoln may have been referring to the issue of slavery in America, but the message is still the same. Racial division will only lead to the degradation of society.

You all say you're fighting for Aussie pride. You're sadly mistaken. Your behaviour epitomises everything that makes me embarrassed to call myself Australian.

12月13日

*sigh* and the mob mentality endures...

Two people of middle-eastern background bash lifeguard...

"White Australian" youths call gangs to arms...beat crap out of innocent people who also appear to be of middle-eastern background...

Gangs consisting of youths of middle-eastern retaliate...

vicious cycle comes full-circle and will continue in this non-progressive manner until both parties come to the sudden and confronting realisation that senseless violence in no way gets us anywhere...

some expert on the television today (can't remember his name) made an interesting comment that these riots are not about multiculturalism but about a failure on the behalf of the New South Wales justice system....that people have been getting away with light sentences for violent crimes and this is the youths expressing their anger...that may be true...but i'm sure "white australians" (god that sounds awful!) get off easily on some things too

now, i will not profess to know all the facts...this goes way behond my tiny brain's ability to comprehend the intricate workings of society...but it seems to me that he's almost making an excuse for this happening...he in no way condoned what they're doing, but he gave a reason for their doing it...that interested me and angered me at  the same time...you watch the footage of these riots, and it's clear that the culprits aren't seven year-olds who wouldn't be expected to understand the consequences of their actions...actually come to think of it seven year olds may be expected to understand that...but anyhow, that's beside the point...these people are grown adults, who DEFINITELY should know better.

It's kind of ironic...we all sat and shook our heads disapprovingly during the Paris riots...no-one ever expected it to happen here...but it did...and the sad thing is that the behaviour of this minority is ruining it for the majority...jeez, the asian leaders have reservations about us joining their sector partly because of these hooligans. Some reflection on the rest of our generally decent society, hey?

I'm not sure if this all makes sense...i don't care...but i have better things to do than waste my time giving attention-seekers more time than they deserve.

I'm outta here xoxo

and now in english:

Craziness decided to invite her friends to have a coffee at her house. After the coffee, Craziness suggested

"Shall we play hide and seek?"

"Hide and Seek? What's that?" demanded Curiosity.

"Hide and Seek is a game. I count to 100 and you all hide. When I have finished counting, I will search, and the first that i find will be the counter next time." THey all accepted with the excpetion of Fear and Laziness.

"1,2,3-" Craziness began to count.

Haste hid in the first place she found.

Shyness, shy like always, hid in a group of trees.

Sadness began to cry because she couldnt find a corner suitable to hide herself in.

Joy ran in the middle of the garden

Envy joined herself to Triumph and hid next to him behind a rock.

Craziness continued to count while her friends hid.

Desperation was desperate seeing as Craziness was already at 99.

"ONE HUNDRED!!" yelled Craziness and she began to search.

The first to be found was Curiosity, as she hadn't been able to stop herself from leaving her hiding place to see who would be the first discovered.

Looking around, Craziness saw Doubt above a surrounding wall of which he wasnt sure on which side it would be best to hide. And so on followed the discoveries of Joy, Sadness, and Shyness.

When they were all reunited, Curiosity asked:
"Where's Love?"

No-one had seen him.

Craziness began to search for him. She looked above a mountain, in the rivers, under the rocks. But she didn't find Love.

Searching all over the place, Craziness saw a rosebush, took a piece of wood and began to search among the branches, so that all of a sudden she heard a yell.

It was Love, yelling because a thorn had poked him in the eye. Craziness didnt know what to do. She apologised to Love, imploring him to forgive her and promised to follow him always.

Love accepted the apology.

Today, Love is blind and Craziness always accompanies him.

peace out xoxoxo

This is such a cute story!

STORIELLA TROPPO BELLA:

La Follia decise di invitare i suoi amici a prendere
un caffè da lei. Dopo il caffè, la Follia propose:
"Si gioca a nascondino?".
"Nascondino?
Che cos'è?" - domandò la Curiosità.

"Nascondino è un gioco. Io conto fino a cento e voi

gruppo d'alberi.

Hi all!

Just another pointless comment to kill some time while I wait for a half decent television program to appear on my..well...television...*ahem*
So, Ashleigh, Jackie and I went to see Tim Burton's Corpse Bride today...Arianna was right..it's soooo good...the storyline's really cute and the animation is awesome!

Chiara sent this to me...I can't be bothered forwarding it, but it's really pretty...

Translation:
Find the person: who calls you beautiful instead of hot,
who calls you back when you slam the telephone down on them, who remains awake just to watch you sleep.

Await the person who kisses you on the forehead, who proudly wants to show you to the world even when you're wearing your tracksuit, who takes your hand in front of their friends

Await the person who always reminds you how much they're attached to you, and how much they are fortunate to have you.

Await the person who turns to their friends and says "...it's her" or "...it's him"

I'm going to make dinner...spread the love guys ;)
